Sarah Burke was critically injured in Park City on Tuesday while training for the Winter X Games. She was airlifted to a hospital in Salt Lake City and underwent surgery to repair an artery in her neck. As of right now, the details are light but the support for Sarah on the internet is tremendous.
I wanted to share some statistics from Twitter around the #BelieveInSarah hashtag to show everyone how much Sarah means not just to the ski industry, but to the entire action sports industry as a whole. Almost 2,000 people on Twitter (the majority of which have ever meet Sarah) used the #BelieveInSarah hashtag to show their love and support for someone that they’ve admired and followed through her amazing career. By using something as simple as the hashtag, they were able to reach almost 1.5 million people on Twitter.
While data is often cold and rigid, these numbers show just how passionate and tight-knit this community is. When something happens to one of our own, we’re quick to offer love, support, time and resources to those in need. So while we all stay glued to Twitter, Facebook and the industry media outlets waiting to hear of good news, we all continue to #BelieveInSarah.
